The Autonomously Replicating Sequence Binding Factor 1, or ABF1 is a site specific DNA-binding protein that can function in both transcriptional activation and repression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In particular, the Alcohol Dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1) promoter gene contains two ABF1 binding sites in its promoter and coding regions. Both ABF1 binding sites have been shown to be transcriptional activators, as deletions and mutations at these sites has decreased transcriptional activity. ABF1 behaves as a transcriptional factor or activator for the ADH1 promoter.
