Description

Lycopene is synthesised by three proteins encoded by the three genes CrtE, CrtB and CrtI.

The three enzymes involved act sequentially on farnesyl diphosphate, to produce lycopene.

Lycopene has a red pigment and acts as a powerful antioxident in the body.

Notes

The two PstI sites within CrtI have been mutated out using point mutagenesis.

All three genes were cloned so they still retain their native ribosome binding sites.
