Description

Gene t encodes a holin, which is considered to degrade or alter the cytoplasmic membrane, thus allowing lysozymes from T4 gene e to reach the periplasm and gain access to the peptidoglycan layer. Essential component of the cell-lysis system triggered by T4 bacteriophage in E. coli. Expression induces cell-lysis.

Notes

A protein that could effectively trigger cell-lysis in E. coli upon selective induction. When looking for a cell-lysis pathway, system had to be shown to work in E. coli, be non-lethal until induction, and act quickly once triggered. This particular gene was designed by Morita, et al to turn on following inducible expression of a target protein, a feature that could be used to easily purify a protein of interest. Furthermore, Morita, et al report that cell-lysis proceeded efficiently at both mid or late logarithmic growth phase.
